To be certified, do I need to identify as someone in recovery?
Peer Support Specialists and Certified Recovery Mentors are required to have essential lived experience as a foundation for their work. To obtain certification from either the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) or the Mental Health & Addiction Certification Board of Oregon (MHACBO), individuals must demonstrate a minimum of two years of sustained recovery from substance use or mental health challenges. On the other hand, a Certified Recovery Mentor, whose certification is sanctioned by the Mental Health & Addiction Certification Board of Oregon (MHACBO), focuses on guiding individuals through their recovery while emphasizing the importance of personal growth and empowerment. Both roles are essential in fostering a supportive environment that encourages healing, growth, and the development of coping strategies tailored to each individual’s unique experiences.
